Eligibility
The application process is open to 8th grade students who scored a minimum stanine of 5, in both reading and mathematics, on their most recent standardized test.

The test scores used to determine eligibility are the 7th grade reading comprehension and total mathematics from the ISAT, or a nationally normed standardized test such as the ITBS, Terra Nova, Stanford Achievement Test (Version 9 or 10), or California Achievement Test.

English Language Learners in bilingual programs and students with special needs and/or disabilities are encouraged to apply to the Selective Enrollment High Schools. Certain students in these categories are eligible with reading and mathematics stanines that total 10, such as a 3 and 7, or 6 and 4. Contact your school counselor or principal for details.

The Selective Enrollment High Schools occasionally have openings and accept students at the 10th through 12th grade levels. Parents should contact each school individually to inquire about the transfer application process.

Each student may submit one Selective Enrollment High School application. The application allows up to four school choices, which are ranked #1 through #4.

The Selective Enrollment application process is completely separate from the application used for other CPS high schools. Students interested in the Selective Enrollment High Schools must submit the Selective Enrollment High Schools Program and Military Academies Enrollment Program application to their elementary school. One application will cover all of your Selective Enrollment choices.

Criteria for selection is based on an application score that balances entrance exam results with standardized test scores, grades and attendance records.

The application score includes:
  • The entrance exam (30% or 300 points)
  • 7th grade reading and math test results (30% or 300 points)
  • 7th grade reading, math, science and social studies grades (30% or 300 points)
  • 7th grade attendance record (10% or 100 points)
The Selective Enrollment High School principals review this application score to select the students who are best prepared to meet the challenge of rigorous academic standards and who will contribute to the school's intellectual, cultural and ethnic diversity.

The principals strive for inclusion of students with special needs, as well as English Language Learners. Please note that principals look closely at how each student ranks his or her school (as their first, second, third, or fourth choice) in the application because the order indicates the student's interest to attend his or her school.
